Neukirchen for lovers of fairy tales

The world of the Brothers Grimm can be seen in the fairytale house in Neukirchen. The half-timbered building dating from the 16th century contains treasures, some of which are more than 150 years old. Lovingly constructed fairytale scenes inspire young and old. The fairytale house can be visited as a museum during the opening hours of the Tourist Information. Visitors are taken on a wondrous journey into the world of fairy tales on fixed dates or per booking inquiry. The wedding room, which in recent years has become a popular alternative venue to the registry office, can also be visited.

Neukirchen Historical Tidbits

In 2017 the town celebrated its 875th anniversary, which dates back to the first documentary mention in 1142. At this time a certain Reginhart de Nuwenkirchen signed a document in which the Hersfeld abbot Heinrich designated a piece of land on the Werra for the construction of a hospital for the poor.

Neukirchen for holiday tourists and day visitors

In the 14th century, the village became a town. A protective wall was finished around 1396. The Nikolai Church stands here since the 15th century. You can visit the Türmerstube, where the last baby was born in 1841. An ascent over 132 steps to the top of the mighty 36 m high fortified tower of the three-nave hall church in late Gothic style is rewarded by a magnificent view.

The Neukirchen Museum of Local History on the historical market square – right next to the Nikolai Church – is somewhat hidden in a half-timbered building with an interesting past because, in 1768, the pupils there went to the so-called Latin School. The museum conveys an impression of the former life in the Schwalm with an originally furnished school class, as well as memories from the East German cultural area. A visit to the baking house in Riebelsdorf or a hike to the Christeröder waterfall are only a few of the recommended destinations.
