South of the 592-metre high Rimberg between Bad Hersfeld and Alsfeld lie the mighty ruins of Herzberg Castle on a elongated basalt peak in a dominant position. High above the old "through the short Hesse" trade route, it was built by Marshal Heinrich von Romrod in the 13th century. The castle has been owned by the von Dörnberg family since 1477. After the castle lost significance during the 7-year war, parts of it were opened for demolition; the first repair work was carried out again in the 19th century.

Today Herzberg Castle has established itself as an event location and offers a wide range of events in and around the castle complex throughout the year.
